History of Hell Freezes Over (2018 Remaster)
Hell Freezes Over is the second live album by the iconic American band The Eagles, originally released in 1994. This album marked a significant milestone in The Eagles’ history, as it represented their reunion after a fourteen-year hiatus following their breakup in 1980. The title Hell Freezes Over is a direct reference to a famous quote by Don Henley, who was once asked when The Eagles would play again, to which he replied: “when Hell freezes over”.
The album features the lineup from The Eagles’ “The Long Run” era: Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Don Felder, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit. It was recorded in April 1994 for an MTV special, and in fact, the concert is widely considered part of the “MTV Unplugged” series. The production of Hell Freezes Over included four new studio songs and eleven live tracks. Among the new songs, “Get Over It” and “Love Will Keep Us Alive” stood out, becoming hit singles that reached the Top 40. Additionally, the album features an acclaimed acoustic version of their classic “Hotel California”.
The reunion tour associated with Hell Freezes Over began on May 27, 1994, and the album was released on November 8, 1994. The 2018 reissue (Remaster 2018) refers to a remastered version of this album, although the specific details of the remaster are not extensively detailed in the Wikipedia sources consulted, beyond its existence as such. Hell Freezes Over is a testament to the enduring popularity and musical legacy of The Eagles, marking a successful return to the stage and the recording studio after a prolonged absence.
History of The Eagles
The Eagles, an iconic American band, was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1971. Its founding members were Don Henley (drums, vocals), Glenn Frey (guitar, vocals), Randy Meisner (bass, vocals), and Bernie Leadon (guitar, vocals). Interestingly, all of them were initially recruited by singer Linda Ronstadt as musicians for her band, playing on her third solo studio album (1972) before striking out on their own to form The Eagles.
Initially, The Eagles’ music was a fusion of country and bluegrass with the harmonies of Californian surf rock. This resulted in sensitive ballads and music with touches of country and pop rock, with lyrics that often addressed themes such as cars, relationships, and aimless lives. Their self-titled debut album, “Eagles” (1972), gave them two Top 20 hits in the United States and Canada: “Take It Easy” and “Witchy Woman.” Their next album, “Desperado” (1973), though it did not reach a high position on the charts, included the popular song of the same name.
The Eagles underwent lineup changes that influenced their musical evolution. In 1974, guitarist Don Felder joined The Eagles, bringing a more electric sound. That same year, their album “On the Border” produced the hit “Already Gone” and their first number-one song in the U.S. and Canada, “Best of My Love.” In 1975, Bernie Leadon left The Eagles and was replaced by guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh, marking a shift toward a more rock-oriented sound. The album “One of These Nights” (1975) became The Eagles' first number-one album in the U.S. and a Top Ten hit in many countries, including the number-one hit “One of These Nights”.
The Eagles became one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s. Their 1976 album, “Hotel California”, is their best-selling studio album, certified 26 times Platinum by the RIAA. The album’s title track was their fourth number-one single on the pop charts. The Eagles split up in 1980, after a decade of massive success and internal tensions.
After a 14-year hiatus, The Eagles reunited in 1994 for the “Hell Freezes Over” tour, which was a resounding success.
They continued to perform and release new material, such as the album “Long Road Out of Eden.” The Eagles remained active until 2016, when the death of one of their founding members and lead vocalists, Glenn Frey, marked a turning point.
Throughout their career, The Eagles have achieved five number-one singles, six number-one albums, six Grammy Awards, and five American Music Awards. They have sold over 200 million records worldwide, including 100 million in the United States alone, making them one of the best-selling musical acts of all time. The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and were ranked No. 75 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2010.
